Every word a writer puts on a page has a strong impact on their readers. These problematic depictions shape what readers know, and consequently, shape how they view Native peoples.
Presently, several authors who write for children and young adults do so from a body of knowledge that has been shaped by depictions of Native peoples in books that are inaccurate.
In this session, Debby Dahl Edwardson and Debbie Reese, who will be joining us via Skype, will talk about classic and popular children’s and young adults books that they view as harmful to what readers know about Alaska Native peoples, and they will suggest alternative titles that can be used to dispel mistaken ideas.
